We recognize that the movement toward an ecological civilization requires a multifaceted approach and that pure rationality does not motivate human behavior as much as the Enlightenment thinkers believed. The movement toward ecological civilization therefore requires new partnerships with literature, music, visual arts, architecture, film, and other media. In this sector we highlight the role of the creative arts, incorporating a diverse group of artists and artistic media. Work for ecological civilization cannot be merely academic or advocacy oriented; it must be holistic and “outside the box.” In human history, it has often been the arts that have inspired humanity to turn from the past toward more adequate structures of civilization.
